Sunman Fire Department and Auxiliary Fish Fry 2010

On Friday February 19th, 2010 the Sunman Fire Department and Auxiliary will host their annual Fish Fry at the Sunman American Legion. All are welcome to the Event. The free-will donation fish dinner starts at 4:30pm and will last until 7:30pm. Individuals will be able to dine in or carry out their meals. The Sunman American Legion is located on Eastern Ave in the town of Sunman. The Sunman Fire Department and Auxiliary thanks everyone who has been there in the past, and we hope to see all of you there again on Friday.

SRFD Acquires Mobile Air Unit

The Sunman Rural Fire Department acquired an Eagle Air Mobile Air Unit trailer from Eagle Compressors, Inc. through the Dearborn Community Foundation grant program.

About the Mobile Air Unit

The Mobile Air Unit trailer allows the Sunman Rural Fire Department to refill SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) cylinders worn by firefighters at fire scenes as well as the high-pressure storage cylinders located on the department’s heavy-rescue truck. This trailer will also be used to provide mutual aid to neighboring departments through emergency scene SCBA management and storage cylinder refill assistance.

Rachel Butt Wins Miss Flame 1st Runner-Up

Rachel Butt was awarded 1st Runner-Up in the 2009 IVFA Miss Flame competition. The Sunman Rural Fire Department along with the Sunman Area Life Squad would like to congratulate Rachel on this outstanding achievement.

About Rachel

Rachel is no stranger to the spotlight when it comes to the IVFA Miss Flame competition. Rachel has competed in multiple Miss Flame competitions and has managed to win the prestigious position of District 19 Miss Flame from 2007 through 2009. Rachel’s father, Doug Butt, and mother Tina Butt, both serve the Sunman Area Life Squad alongside Rachel. Doug also serves as a volunteer firefighter with the Sunman Rural Fire Department.

Sunman Firemen’s Festival 2009

On Friday, June 12th and Saturday, June 13th the Sunman Rural Fire Department will once again host the annual Sunman Rural Firemen’s Festival! This family-friendly event includes live entertainment both nights as well as an assortment of activities for adults and children alike. Friday night’s entertainment will feature the musical talents of the Mount Pleasant String Band, The Renegades, and The Grascals. Saturday night’s entertainment includes music from Anger Element, Wrecked, and Innersoul.

Friday Festivities

The festival kicks off on Friday, June 12th at 4:30pm with a Fish Fry Dinner which will run till 8:00pm. A lunch stand is also available for those that would prefer a hamburger, hotdog, or other type of meal instead. A host of activities, including a variety booth, fish pond, and other games of chance will be open throughout the night. The main event of the night will be our three feature bands including the Mount Pleasant String Band, The Renegades, and The Grascals.

Saturday Activities

The lunch stand will open early Saturday morning for those of you craving a freshly-cooked breakfast sandwich. The day’s events will include a fantastic parade of fire apparatus and floats of all types as well as a wooden-bat softball tournament. If you are interested in entering this tournament please contact Terry Knueven at 812-623-0909.

Saturday night will kick off with a delicious fried chicken dinner starting at 4:00pm and going till 8:00pm. Once again, the various rides, games, and activities will be available for you and your family’s entertainment. Saturday night will feature three incredible bands including Anger Element, Wrecked, and Innersoul.

Getting There

The Sunman Rural Firemen’s Festival will once again be held at the Sunman Community Park (located behind the Post Office on Fitch Ave.). A map of the park’s location is provided below.

The legion is location on Eastern Ave in the town of Sunman. SRFD to Host Open House

The Sunman Rural Fire Department will be hosting an open house Sunday, November 9th through Saturday, November 15th. The open house will provide you with an opportunity to check out the firestation, fleet (i.e. trucks), and the equipment used during fire and EMS incidents. Some of the equipment that will be on display will be our new Engine 1116 pumper, Heavy Rescue Truck 1115, extrication equipment (i.e. jaws of life), and firefighter personal protective equipment (PPE).

1115 Heavy Rescue Truck Dedication

On Monday, October 27th at 6:30pm the Sunman Rural Fire Department, along with members of the Dearborn Community Foundation, held the dedication ceremony for the new 1115 heavy rescue truck. Chief David Smith led the ceremony as he introduced the attendees which included Ron & Bonnie Powell and David & Michelle Deddens from the Dearborn Community Foundation, the Sunman Rural Fire Department truck committee, and members of the press.

This event was held by the Sunman Rural Fire Department to dedicate the new rescue truck that was funded by a grant from the Dearborn Community Foundation as well as funds from the Sunman Firemen’s Festival, the annual appeal to the community and various other donations received throughout the year from individuals and organizations throughout the community. The department sincerely appreciates the assistance in funding this truck which was built to meet the current safety and performance standards required by a modern fire department.

Equipped for Today… and Tomorrow

The new 1115 is a 2008 Spartan / Hackney heavy rescue truck. It has a cab for 6 firefighters and a 20 foot body to transport equipment and supplies. The truck also includes a command center which contains both 800Mhz and low band radios as well as a laptop computer with GPS mapping capabilities. A 35kW generator supplies power to the entire truck including the numerous box-mounted lights and the 9kW telescoping light tower. The Sunman Rural Fire Department also outfitted this truck with up-to-date Hurst extrication equipment to help ease the task of extrication from today’s complex modern vehicles.

This truck also contains additional equipment for firefighter rehabilitation at the scene including a cooling mist fan, water cooler, and EMS kit. These tools are invaluable in keeping firefighters healthy and capable during emergency incidents. The healthy environment is continued throughout scene overhaul as supplies are also provided to allow for on-scene sanitation of gear and equipment that may have become contaminated during the emergency.
